Purpose:
To teach your players how to rotate defensively when the offense attempts a 4 set, otherwise known as an outside set.

Setup:
Have 6 players line up in base position on the court.
You will also need a sturdy box, a ball cart, and an assistant coach or 2.

This drill aims to instruct players on how to adjust defensive positioning when facing an outside (4) set.

Instructions:

  1. The right side blocker (2) will set the block in front of the hitter.
  2. The middle blocker will come to the right side blocker once the block is set.
  3. Then the right back (1) will drop back about 20 feet deep with their right foot on the sideline, ready to hit any ball hit down the line.
  4. The left back (6) will move close to the sideline, lining themselves up so they are inside of the middle blockers left hand.
  5. The left blocker (4) will move back, getting their right foot on the attack line and getting ready for the hard angle shot.
  6. The middle back (5) stays deep, lining themselves up so they are in between the middle blocker’s (3) right hand and the right blocker’s (2) left hand. Their responsibility is any shot down the seam, any balls that have been deflected off the block, or any balls hit deep to either corner

COACHING TIPS

  • When a ball is hit down the seam in the middle, to avoid any confusion or potential collisions we want our middle back (5) to cross deep parallel to the net and our left back (6) crossing in front of them, also parallel to the net.
  • Same for balls hit to the other side of the court – middle back (5) stays deep, right back (1) crosses in front.
