Purpose:
To teach your players how to defend the high/back set in a rotation style defense.
Setup:
Have 6 players line up in base position on the court. You will also need a sturdy box, a ball cart, and an assistant coach or 2.

Instructions:
- The left side blocker (4) will set the block in front of the hitter.
- The middle blocker (3) will come to the left side blocker once the block is set.
- The left back (6) will move up for the short ball.
- The middle back (5) will move over to the left corner.
- The right back will drop back to the right corner.
- The right blocker will come off the net and get ready to dig anything hit at an angle.
Coaching Tips:
- Again, the weakness of this defense is a ball hit down the middle, so if you are having a hard time defending that ball, make the adjustment to move your middle back about 8 feet off the left sideline, closer to the center of the court.
- This will make it easier to defend the middle of the court, but will expose the down the line shot.
- Teach players to anticipate the set and move quickly into position. They should be able to read the setter’s hands and the trajectory of the ball to predict where the set is going.
- Stress the importance of continuous communication among the team, especially between blockers and back-row defenders. Knowing who is covering which area can prevent confusion and strengthen the defense.
- Emphasize the importance of quick and efficient footwork. Players should be able to transition smoothly from their base position to their defensive stance without losing balance or speed.
Tips for Younger Athletes:
- For younger players, focus on teaching the basic positions and movements of the rotation defense. Ensure they understand where to be when the ball is set high and to the back.
- Start with slower-paced drills and gradually increase the speed as players become more comfortable. This helps younger athletes to develop their skills without feeling overwhelmed.
- Encourage and praise effort and progress. Positive reinforcement can boost confidence and help young players stay motivated and engaged.
Tips for Older Athletes:
- Teach older players advanced strategies, like adjusting their position based on the hitter’s approach and tendencies. This could mean shifting slightly to cover more of the court based on the situation.
- Challenge older players to make quick decisions during the drill. In a real game, they will need to assess and react rapidly to the ball’s movement.
- Encourage adaptability in defense. Older players should learn to quickly adjust their positions in response to different offensive strategies, such as a sudden change in the direction of the attack.
