Purpose:
To teach players the importance of quick reactionary plays on the ball so that they can set up for proper 3-hit plays.
What You Need:
- Divide your team into groups of 6.
- One group on the court sitting with their backs to the net in a defensive formation.
- A coach at the net with a ball.
- A designated target near the net.

How It Works:
- On the command “UP,” the coach will toss the ball towards one of the players.
- All the players must stand up quickly, turn around, and respond to the ball.
- As a unit, they should complete a 3-hit play, sending the ball over the net.
- Once that is complete, they will sit back down and start again.
- Rotate new groups in every 3-5 plays.
Results & Tips:
- It is beneficial for coaches to simulate different styles of hits when tossing the ball. This will allow players to gain experience in reacting to all variations of game-like scenarios.
- This drill helps players develop read and recognition skills, along with the ability to still make plays when they are forced to react quickly.
Tips for Younger Athletes:
- Stress the importance of quick and correct positioning after getting up. Young players should learn to orient themselves efficiently in relation to the ball’s trajectory.
- Encourage them to communicate effectively as soon as they stand up. Early communication helps in organizing the team’s response to the ball.
- Focus on teaching them to maintain a low center of gravity during quick turns and movements. This helps in improving balance and agility, which are crucial for reacting to fast plays.
Tips for Older Athletes:
- Challenge them to not only react quickly but also strategically. This means deciding the best play in a split second, considering the opponent’s formation and the ball’s placement.
- Incorporate a variety of complex ball trajectories and speeds. This variation prepares them for unpredictable game situations.
- Emphasize precision in their first touch after standing up. Accurate first touches set the tone for effective 3-hit plays and are essential for advanced gameplay.
