Purpose:
To teach your players how to rotate defensively when the offense attempts a back set, otherwise known as a high set.

Setup:
Have 6 players line up in base position on the court.
You will also need a sturdy box, a ball cart, and an assistant coach or 2.
Instructions:
- The left side blocker (4) will set the block in front of the hitter.
- The middle blocker (3) will come to the right side blocker once the block is set.
- The left back (6) will then drop back about 20 feet deep with their left foot on the sideline, ready to hit any ball hit down the line.
- The right back (1) will move close to the sideline, lining themselves up so they are inside of the middle blockers right hand.
- The right blocker (2) will move back, getting their left foot on the attack line and getting ready for the hard angle shot.
- The middle back (5) stays deep, lining themselves up so they are in between the middle blocker’s (3) left hand and the left blocker’s (2) right hand. Their responsibility is any shot down the seam, any balls that have been deflected off the block, or any balls hit deep to either corner.
Coaching Tips:
- Again, emphasize the importance of your backs communicating and rotating properly – if the ball is hit down the seam in the middle we want our middle back (5) to cross deep and our left back (6) crossing in front of them, both staying parallel to the net.
- And it remains the same for any balls hit on the other side, the middle back (5) stays deep while the right back (1) crosses in front.
