Setup:
- Players will pair off.
- Then, split off into two lines, 10 feet apart and facing each other.
- The player from each pair closest to the net will start with the ball.
Purpose:
This is a light drill, with the focus on developing strong setting fundamentals. This ensures that when players are setting their teammates in drills and game situations, they already have a measure of comfort and a strong foundation.

Execution:
- The player will toss the ball high in the air to their partner.
- The partner will put their hands up, ready to volley, and catch the ball.
- They will then return the ball to their partner, who will toss it back to them once they receive it, continuing the drill in this manner.
Coaching Tips:
- Players should display the proper mechanics and fundamentals – hands up together, hands over the forehead, in a triangle formation, with hands spread wide.
- Players should catch the ball in an athletic stance, with feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent.
- Once they’ve progressed and are comfortable, you can have the players begin to start setting the ball back to their partner.
- Once the setter has had a chance to get a good number of reps, the partners will switch, and the setter will become the passer.
- You can also give players a chance to work on setting short, forcing them to come in. Eventually, you’ll want to have them start moving back, increasing the distance between them and making sure to use their legs to cover the extra distance.
Tips for Younger Athletes:
- Maintain a balanced stance with knees slightly bent and feet shoulder-width apart, providing a stable base for both catching and tossing the ball.
- Encourage communication with their partner during the drill, calling out when about to toss the ball, to develop teamwork and court understanding.
- Focus on the follow-through after tossing the ball, extending their arms fully towards their partner, for improved accuracy and control in tosses.
Tips for Older Athletes:
- Stress the need for consistent hand positioning when setting, forming a consistent shape resembling a window for uniform sets.
- Instruct to vary the height and speed of their tosses, preparing for different types of sets and enhancing adaptability.
- Practice setting from different body positions, including while moving, to simulate real game scenarios and develop the ability to set accurately under pressure.
