Purpose:

To teach players to read and anticipate an attack from an opponent

What You Need:

  • Set-up 1 line of players in the middle back
  • Set-up 1 line of players on the right side of the court
  • Set-up 2 lines of players on the left side of the court
  • Designate 1 Setter near the net and one coach next to them

How It Works:

  • One player from each line steps onto the court to be defenders
  • The coach will attack the ball and hit it towards the defenders
  • The players must move defensively depending on the attack and where the coach is facing
  • The defenders will receive the ball and dig it up to the Setter
  • The Setter will set the ball up in the air to set up the coach for another attack
  • Continue this cycle, have players rotate either after touching the ball 3 times or letting it drop 1 time

Results & Tips:

  • In this drill, have the players watch the arm of the coach, which gives away what they will do and where the attack is going
  • Make sure the players know what parts of the court they are responsible to cover

For younger athletes:

  • Emphasize proper footwork techniques. Encourage players to stay on their toes and use shuffle steps to move laterally, helping them to react more quickly to the ball.
  • Teach players to call out “Mine!” or “Yours!” when going for the ball. This helps avoid collisions and ensures that every ball is attended to.
  • Guide players to watch the coach’s body language, not just the arm, to better predict the direction and speed of the attack.

For older athletes:

  • Focus on refining defensive postures. Encourage players to adopt a low and wide stance, enabling quicker dives and effective ball handling during digs.
  • Incorporate split-second decision-making exercises. Challenge players to make quick decisions about positioning and ball handling, enhancing their ability to react under pressure.
  • Stress the importance of strategic positioning based on the opponent’s attack patterns. Encourage players to read the game and adjust their defensive positions accordingly.
